America Off The Rails: Twenty-Five Years Later: What Does Winning Look Like?

Twenty-five years after September 11, America still remembers the lives lost—but has it learned the right lessons from everything that followed?

Rick Robinson reflects on the attacks, the people whose names must not be forgotten, and the transformation of American life through the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, airport security, surveillance, and two decades of war. He examines the human and financial cost of Afghanistan and Iraq, the chaotic withdrawal from Kabul, and the uncomfortable question that must precede every military commitment: What does winning actually look like?

That question becomes urgent again as conflict with Iran escalates. Rick considers attacks on shipping, the Strait of Hormuz, energy prices, proxy forces, regional alliances, nuclear ambitions, and the danger of entering another open-ended conflict without a clearly defined objective or exit.

The program concludes with the mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy case, jurors’ accounts of the deliberations, reasonable doubt, criminal responsibility, and the difficult distance between moral judgment and the legal standard required for conviction.

Memory matters. Justice matters. But neither can substitute for clear objectives, honest accountability, and the courage to recognize when a mission has lost its way.
